Welcome Chemistry Students! Tuesday, February 20, 2001 I am sorry I can not be with you today. I know you are expecting to work on Metal ID but you may not be in the lab with a substitute :( Since the sophomores have CSAP today, I have a mini project for you to work on called Marvelous Element. Instructions can be found below. You may use today to do research for the project as well as for Metal ID and you may also work on your chapter 4 handout. For Marvelous Element, each of you will choose any element on the periodic table, except those elements that we are using for Metal ID. If someone will get a piece of paper and have each student choose an element and record this for me. Be sure you each have a unique element! Also, be sure you have an element that you can get information about; some of the higher numbered elements do not have much information. You may use ActivChem for part of your research. Also, check out the periodic table sites on this web site as they have a lot of information on the elements. You will do your oral presentations on Wednesday, February 28 (I think the sophomores will be gone all day for CSAP so it will just be us again). See you tomorrow:)
Marvelous Element Contest Choose one element, different from everyone else. You must research your element to find why it is unique and marvelous. There are two parts of this contest: a visual presentation and an oral presentation. Visual Presentation: The first part of the project is a visual presentation. This part may be a mobile, a poster, a three dimensional creation, a power point presentation, a web page or a method of your choice. This part of the project is worth 25 points. It should address the following: Part Attribute Physical Should be visually stimulating, attractive, neat. Content Should address at least 10 important facts about your element. Resources Should be written on another sheet of paper, correctly cited.
Oral Presentation: The second part of this project is an oral presentation about your element. It should convince the audience that your element is truly the most marvelous element. This part of the project is worth 25 points. It should contain the following parts: Part Attribute Speech Presents your ideas to the audience to persuade them that your element is most marvelous; you may have a card as a prompt; do not read! Body Language Conveys enthusiasm and emotion. You are confident that your element is most marvelous. Voice Clear pronunciation; enthusiastic; persuasive, maintain eye contact with the audience. After the oral presentations on Wednesday the class will vote for the following: Most Marvelous Element Most Convincing Most Original Presentation Each winner of these three will win 5 EC points and a prize! Good luck! |
